The Farm
The Lodge is a small mixed farm run using simple, organic, labour intensive
methods. There are daycare places for up to 18 people.
Diversity of work on offer is a more important consideration than the
"profitability" of each enterprise and so the range of the Glevum Farm Trust's
products is wide, from strawberries to beef. Basic building and fencing has
been an important feature of our work. The horticultural area of the farm
includes vegetable production, soft fruit and top fruit as well as flowers. Areas
of protected cropping under polythene and glass produce tomatoes, peppers,
bedding plants and plants for hanging baskets for sale. The livestock enterprises are
just as diverse. The Glevum Farm Trust has a flock of sheep producing wool
and fat lambs and a small herd of beef cows.
There is no doubt that the atmosphere of mutual respect and care, and the
calming therapeutic benefits of close personal contact with farm work, and
particularly animals, has benefited our service users. This benefit will
continue to be monitored through the on-going Individual Care Planning
system in place for every service user. The quality assurance programme will
also highlight the mere tangible changes in the user group by monitoring
progress enhanced independence skills and reductions in the incidence of
challenging behaviour. All this improves self image and social skills.
